I’ve always found Will Oldham to be one of those artists that I can take or leave. It could be the style of music (I go through stages of liking/being ambivalent towards Americana), but only a complete ass would discount the man’s talent.
Wolfroy goes to Town (which I have heard snippets of) sounds fantastic – and going from this performance, an album that I need to delve further into…
Not a too shabby performance to notch up the 100th episode of the Black Cab Sessions either.
As time goes by, Alex Turner and go inevitably get older and older – result, less songs about being a lad, and more dark and mature approaches to their music. Their sound hasn’t changed sonically, but their tempo and urgency has. Less like nervous teenage boys, and more like someone in their 20′s who’ve been at it for years.
This clip from the Jonathan Ross earlier this month captures the brit foursome and their most awesome; it could possibly be the most pitch perfect display you’re ever likely to see on TV (which is a little fishy, but I’m happy to overlook that).
For better or worse, I really dig a good mash up. Max Tannone’s Ghostfunk, Mos Dub and Doublecheck Your Head mashups get me noddin’ everytime.
This morning on Radio Active, Redbird dropped JStar’s (Still) Passing Me By, a Studio One lean on the timeless Pharcyde classic.
Something about putting Reggae and Hip-Hop together is do damn sweet. The only thing sweeter is good quality downloads….(and JStar’s soundcloud offers both).
Seriously catchy beat done using simple household noises. Probably a heap of talent in there too, but goes to show how simple making music can be with modern technology.
While listening to them gives you the sense that harmony and gloriousness is what the Fleet Foxes are all about, obviously, being in the band isn’t exactly what drummer J. Tillman had in mind.
From his Tumblr today…
“Back into the gaping maw of obscurity I go,” he wrote in the farewell message. “Tokyo is my last show with the Foxes.
Bummer. Dude provided some of the sweetest backing vocals in the biz, which I suppose, could be a blessing and a curse.
Check out their performance from PBS’ Austin City Limits show for proof. Like butter.

Scammed this from someone on Twitter; the top image is from 1pm BDO 2007, the lower one from 1pm this year….it looks like Mountain Rock (ala 1992).
Laneways anyone?
Having finally moved my hosting to a new provider, I can now get back to blogging like I used to…kind of. It’s been nearly six years since I kicked off this blog, with the sole purpose to document my progress in listening to 365 albums in a year (yeah, I did that), and my life has changed, A LOT since then.
Time is like some sort of new privilege or delicacy that I never get…between parenting, studying and the like, I spend my life in a state of go; with some thankful relaxing moments in between.
This blog will continue to run – my new hosting plan has no storage limit, and it would be a shame not to use it! Music will continue to be the second love of my life and so will feature heavily in my posts, but I’ve also garnered a heavy appreciation of technology, design and general faff.
But yeah, about the music. Here’s some heavy 90′s remix styles; one hit wonders Bran Van 3000′s timeless ‘Drinkin’ in L.A’, with some badass low-end. Just like good old times…kind of.
While out pounding my lungs and knees into submission today, this little ditty played and reminded me how much I love it.
Summer.
Sun.
Tequila.
and this track.
Bliss.
Caught this on one of the more recent Tru-Thoughts Podcasts (Robert Luis). Brilliant, big band feel, with a modern pitch.
So great to see another NZ act getting hype off-shore; even if the track is an oldie (!).
